MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

INDUSTRY NEWS - May 2024

by Don Thompson

BC’s Creative Industries Week (April 22-25) featured many of BC’s leading producers, physical production, union, and post and VFX players meeting with MLA’s and government officials in Victoria to showcase the strength of BC’s creative economy. VPA Vice Chair Kelsy Wittmann was in attendance to ensure our sector’s creative and technical skills were recognized.

NAB 2024

NAB in Las Vegas predictably saw an impressive array of new AI software features and promises of expanded cloud based editing and collaboration tools. With a strong showing by members of our post community, attendees at the technology show were wowed by developments from Blackmagic, Avid, Adobe and many others. There were also major camera developments shown, with the new Sony Burano 8K “solo cine” camera and Blackmagic’s Ursa Cine 12K camera leading the pack. Other highlights included Strada’s new AI Creative Companion tool and Flanders XMP color reference monitor.

LARCO INVESTMENTS / BRIDGE STUDIOS

The recent decision by Larco Investments to cancel the construction of their new Bridge Studios stages at Big Bend in Burnaby was not a surprise, as studio players worldwide are re-formulating their plans to address the spending reductions by the major studios and streamers. Bridge Studios is still however in construction of their new Lake City stages, to join the existing Boundary and newly opened Griffiths facilities. Martini Studios major expansion in Langley is also on hold pending municipal issues, and plans for a new 450,000 sq ft studio campus at Willingdon and Canada Way, by a partnership between the Musqueam Indian Band, Tsleil-Waututh First Nation, and Aquilini Development, are still in the planning stages.

IATSE

All eyes are on IATSE’s negotiations with the major studios for their new agreement in the US. Talks for the Basic Agreement are expected to run until mid-May, at which point IATSE will continue into bargaining for the Area Standards Agreement, which covers 23 additional IATSE locals across the U.S. Among the general proposals for the 3 year agreement are wage increases and residual funding for the health and pension plan, as well as protections against artificial intelligence. Any gains will likely be coveted for inclusion in the next BC contract slated for 2025.
