An examination of the life and legacy of Sly & The Family Stone — the groundbreaking band led by the charismatic and enigmatic Sly Stone — captures the band’s rise, reign, and subsequent fadeout while shedding light on the unseen burden that comes with success for Black artists in America.
Academy Award-winning director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson returns to the festival with a music-rich, profound exploration. Eschewing conventional biographical methods, the film immediately envelops us in band leader Sly Stone’s extraordinary musical talent while asking: What is the burden of Black genius? Sly transcended musical boundaries like no one else, but trailblazing comes at a personal cost.

As a community supporter of Intersections Media, Vancouver Post Alliance is happy to announce that its Digital Media Workshop Program applications are still open. The new intake will start on January 27th.
The program provides participants with the skills and opportunities to achieve entry-level positions in the film industry. It provides life skills, training, employment readiness skills, work experience/on-the-job training, job coaching, and ongoing support for underrepresented and marginalized youth.

What a year this has been. From rebounding after the devastating strikes
in 2023 to the renewed optimism from our members’ work on projects like “Longlegs,” “Heretic” and “Allegiance,” 2024 has been full of happy surprises.
For the VPA’s Board, we also found success with our first-ever LA Post Mission, which saw a talented cross-section of Vancouver’s post leaders and creatives presenting an impressive panel and networking reception for a group of studio-level post executives from features, television and animation. This is already turning into connections and bidding opportunities for next year, and laying the foundation for new events and conversations for LA in
the future.
We also hosted our two banner members events, the Summer Solstice BBQ and our Holiday Party, which were both at overflow capacity and saw our members sharing their year’s wins and losses with their colleagues with a festive spirit.
We recognize the trust you have placed in us to be your voice for industry issues and will continue to lobby for the Post sector when it comes to government dialogue, professional development and mentorship, or diversity and inclusion.
We hope you enjoy the holidays with those close to you, however you choose to celebrate. Happy Holidays!
