Tell us a bit about your company.
Barnhouse Sound Productions Ltd. is a Sound Production company that offers sound engineering, music production, and film and television post production services. We have pre-production facilities in Victoria, BC and a destination recording studio, The Barnhouse, in Qualicum Beach, BC.

Our in house Producer/Engineer Justin LaPointe has 10+ years experience in the industry. We also love to host freelance engineers and producers as well! After studying Business and Economics at University of Victoria and Sound Engineering at Berklee College of Music, Justin cut his teeth as an engineer at Electric City Sound in Victoria, BC. There, he worked with many local and international bands, artists, producers as well as movie/television projects. Since opening The Barnhouse Destination Studio he has recorded many local and non-local bands, Solo Artists, Pod Casts. Audiobooks, done sound design for movies and TV shows and big band/jazz/classical ensembles for local high schools and universities. The Barnhouse is also a live performance venue, as well as a location for video and film shoots.

How many staff members / freelancers do you employ?
We have 2 permanent staff members and bring in freelancers from our network of local Vancouver island talent.

What are you working on right now and/or recently completed?
We are currently working on producing 2 musical projects with local island artists Kody Arthur and Austin Mor. We are also currently scoring a music making documentary series pilot-project for a film maker out of Austin Texas, USA, named Dylan Jewett. He saw success at last year's summer film festivals with his last release "Four Houses to Magnolia" which won some awards. We also collaborated on this project.

Our favourite post-released project we have worked on lately is the short film "Four Houses to Magnolia" by Dylan Jewett, a film maker out of Austin, Texas, USA. It won multiple awards at summer film festivals last year including "Best Ensemble Cast". Our in house Producer Justin LaPointe wrote and performed the score for the film, as well as mixing the dialogue, FX and music.

What percentage of your work is with local vs international clients/projects? I would say our business is 55% local, and 45% percent international.

Are you a Mac / PC / Linux shop or all of the above? We are a Mac and PC shop.

What software / hardware / plugins can you not live without? Pro tools. Our Neumann and Coles microphones. Universal audio plug-ins and Isotope post-production and mastering tools.

Are Dolby Atmos/Dolby Vision capabilities something you have or are looking into? We are currently researching and developing our Atmosphere/Dolby vision capabilities.

How difficult has the pandemic been for day to day operations? The pandemic was difficult at the beginning with the lack of travel, however now that the world is more used to it, it has settled back to somewhat of a "normal". The post-pandemic world is much more willing to collaborate and work remotely, which is a plus in the recording business. I have seen our day-to-day operations shift to more remote work, specifically for mixing and mastering.

Any workflow improvements brought about by the need to work remotely? We have developed a screen share a video system using a combination of hardware and software to achieve a more collaborative and interactive experience. Modern audio streaming software such as audio-movers and session wire has definitely helped our remote workflow.

What do you miss most about "in person" client sessions? What we miss the most about in person sessions is the spontaneous inspiration that sometimes comes when new people are in a new room together for the first time.

How long have you been a VPA Corporate Member? 2 months.

Is there anything else about you or your company that you'd like people to know about that we haven't yet asked? Our primary objective when we established Barnhouse Sound is to build our culture. Our culture at barnhouse sound starts with the artist experience; which is a calm, safe, dependable, respectable sanctuary which is very conducive to creativity and artistry.
