GEMFest continues to provide a platform for challenging gender inequity and the lack of diversity in the screen-based media industry through film screenings, discussions, professional development and networking opportunities.
This year, they are adding some Industry Awards for the first time, with an industry jury to review your nominations and select the honourees. All women or gender-diverse people based in British Columbia are eligible for these four new awards.

This month`s featured member, Editor / Assistant Editor Jason Hamill, has been working in post for the past 6 years and recently had the pleasure of cutting the horror film Lowlifes with some of his best friends.
When not working, Jason rides his bike and makes “dumb tough guy music.” He owes his success to spending time building relationships with people around him and getting to know them on a personal level.

👀 TUNE IN!
Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius)
January 23 - Sundance Film Festival
February 13 - Hulu and Disney+
An examination of the life and legacy of Sly & The Family Stone — the groundbreaking band led by the charismatic and enigmatic Sly Stone — captures the band’s rise, reign, and subsequent fadeout while shedding light on the unseen burden that comes with success for Black artists in America.
Academy Award-winning director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson returns to the festival with a music-rich, profound exploration. Eschewing conventional biographical methods, the film immediately envelops us in band leader Sly Stone’s extraordinary musical talent while asking: What is the burden of Black genius? Sly transcended musical boundaries like no one else, but trailblazing comes at a personal cost.
