Welcome back after another summer of uncertainty throughout our industry. While the sunshine and time with family and friends was a welcome solace to our months of rain and cool weather on the coast, it only temporarily masked the disappointment and distress as many in production and post struggled to find work to support themselves or their companies and employees.
Recently Gemma Martini, the Chair of Screen BC (MPPIA), wrote a letter to their members sharing the key points of concern for BC’s film and television sector and what actions they hope to lead with the Screen BC Letter. I hope you can also support it as a member of the VPA and our film community.
Most importantly I think we need to stay strong and work together to build the industry back up piece by piece; embracing new technologies and workflows, training new members for the future, and sharing knowledge and ideas to make Vancouver an even better place to post picture, sound, VFX and music.
The VPA Board is organizing our first mission to LA this fall, to help educate the studios, streamers and networks about the benefits of posting in BC and the depth of our amazing talent. We’ll also be gaining market intelligence to find out where we need to do better and what new initiatives and opportunities might help us grow stronger.
In the meantime, let’s celebrate some of the recent wins we’ve had with our talented members working on shows like Shogun, Snowpiercer, Longlegs, Watson and Virgin River. We have a lot to be proud of, and it will continue!
