INDUSTRY UPDATE - November 2024

by Don Thompson

Despite the recent downturn in production and post throughout the industry, it’s great to see a number of local teams in development and production of independent features and shorts. These are often the launch pads for new talent across all crew positions including editorial, sound, scoring and vfx. Its also a great opportunity for our local facilities to showcase their work as awards bait, and an investment in educating and developing future clients.

The VPA Board is excited to be launching our first Post Mission to LA in November alongside our partners at Screen BC. A panel and networking event Vancouver Unlocked: Your Partner in Post Production will see many of Vancouver’s top facilities and key panelists present to invited guests from the major studios and streamers. This will be our opportunity to showcase the world class work that our members have been doing, our production and post tax incentives in BC, and the partnerships we have built to help facilitate remote work. Wish us luck!

Other news:

  • Creative BC shows 27 productions (features, MOWs, series and pilots) on their current report including Season 2 of “Allegiance” (Lark) and Director Jason James indie feature “All Night Wrong”.
  • IATSE 891 current stats show roughly 35% of membership are working (all categories). Also noted are 4 projects posting in BC that were shot in other locations. They will enter bargaining on a new US contract with the AMTP in January.
  • DGC has wrapped their bargaining with the AMTP and waiting for certification by their membership. Teamsters and UBCP/ACTRA will also commence sector bargaining shortly.
