AGM & RECENT NEWS - June 2024

by Don Thompson

Spring is always a time of renewal and that includes for our VPA Board. Our Annual General Meeting on May 28th was a success, with a good crowd in attendance, and some fresh Nominees for the Board elected by acclamation.

We also held a brief Townhall to share the state of the industry, and hear back from members on their hopes for our organization in the year ahead.

Some industry highlights:
  • Local industry reports show an overdue increase in domestic production last year, which helps support local creative development for writers, directors, producers and all of us in post. It also helps strengthen our local production companies, allowing them opportunities to further develop local stories and IP.
  • More BC Directors are working in other locations beyond our borders, as studios start to recognize our talent base. Our Sound, Picture and VFX crews also benefit as these Directors look to their favoured talent relationships in BC to work alongside them.
  • The Motion Picture Production Industry Association of BC (MPPIA) has rebranded as Screen BC. They also renewed their Board at their recent AGM, adding Company 3’s Lindsay Elizabeth Donovan as the Director representing the Post sector. BC’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport Lana Popham spoke of our industry’s creativity, resilience, and its continued success as an economic driver in BC.
  • The Leo Awards are coming up July 6 & 7th and will feature a broad representation of our members’ work. Congratulations to all the nominees! VIEW VPA MEMBER NOMS
