VPA Message from the Chair: April 2025

INDUSTRY UPDATE - April 2025

by Don Thompson

As this will be my last Message from the Chair, I thought I would reflect on some of the wins for our post community in the last year:

  • The rise in independent features like The Monkey, Heretic, and Longlegs posting with our local talent and facilities has brought new recognition of our creative depth, and helped showcase our ability to compete on a global playing field.
  • The VPA’s Mission to LA last year helped bring our post community’s leaders together in a concerted effort to educate the studios and networks about our depth of rising talent, competitive tax incentives, and the range of facility offerings across picture, sound and VFX. It also started new discussions amongst the players of how we can work together instead of against each other to strengthen our base.
  • More shows that have been shot in foreign locations are increasingly choosing BC for their post production work and its being recognized by our partners.
  • The Province of BC increased Creative BC’s tax incentive programs for both Foreign and Domestic production/post by 8%, which has now put our industry into a very competitive position against other locations.

Although I am stepping down from the VPA Board and as its Chair, I am encouraged by the energy and momentum of the talent we have in BC. I hope that some of you will choose to rise up to the opportunity of joining the Board of Directors at our AGM or Volunteer with the VPA, and help be part of the solution to our future challenges. I also want to thank the many colleagues who helped found the VPA in 2012 and have kept that spirit going since. Your efforts are seen and appreciated.

Enjoy the Spring everyone!
