VPA is once again offering this FREE career development webinar perfect for the next wave of Vancouver’s Post talent. “School’s Done, What Comes Next?” will give film students and recent grads a chance to learn from a panel of established Post pros. How did their careers get started? What are the best first steps? Where’s the Post field headed? Oct 20 on Zoom.
The VPA is thrilled to support VIFF and our community of local filmmakers. This year, we are presenting Bringing Monsters to Life, featuring VFX Supervisor Dennis Berardi, VFX Supervisor for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
Straight from the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Berardi will sit down with us on October 11 to discuss his belief that spectacular effects must always serve the narrative. Join us as he shares insights from his work, exploring how modern VFX techniques honour the legacy of practical effects while opening new storytelling possibilities.
Moderated by Michael Cliett, VFX Supervisor, Shōgun
Featuring three VPA Members, this Industry panel explores the creative power of sound, colour, and VFX, and how AI is transforming workflows with innovation and sustainability.
Moderated by VPA Chair Kelsy Wittmann, speakers include VPA Board Member Edward J Douglas, VFX supervisor on independent and feature films including with Neon and A24; VPA Member Hugh Wielenga, two-time Emmy-nominated Sound Designer; Patrick Gong, Vancouver-based colourist with work on CBC, Telus, and global festivals; and Noah Rogers, Production Sustainability Manager and Chair of the DGC BC Sustainability Committee, who has led clean-tech initiatives with studios such as Disney and ABC.

Featured Member: Kelly Wong
VFX Editor / 1st Assistant Editor
This month, we’re spotlighting VFX Editor / 1st Assistant Editor Kelly Wong. Kelly has spent nearly 20 years building her career in post-production and recently reached an exciting milestone — stepping into her first solo VFX Editor role on The Recruit. It’s a project she counts as a true highlight, not only for the work itself but for the incredible team she collaborated with.
A graduate of UBC’s Film Production program, Kelly began her journey in the industry through volunteer work before landing a role at Technicolor as a telecine assistant. One of those early volunteer experiences eventually led to an opportunity as an Assistant Editor — setting the course for a long and evolving career in editorial and VFX.
Kelly is a strong believer in the power of mentorship and meaningful collaboration. She credits much of her growth to mentors who took a chance on her and generously shared their knowledge. That foundation continues to shape how she approaches her work today, combining creativity and technical precision to solve complex storytelling challenges with confidence and care.
She’s also passionate about the Vancouver post-production community and believes the depth of talent here deserves greater recognition on major projects.
Read Kelly’s full interview on our website, where she shares her journey, her perspective on the industry, and why working on The Mandalorian (and maybe running into Pedro Pascal 😉) would be a dream. Link in bio!
