Our Story
Who is the Vancouver Post Alliance?
Before the creation of the Vancouver Post Alliance (VPA), the interests of British Columbia’s post production industry were represented in the 1980s and 1990s by the BC Motion Picture Association (BCMPA) and then, beginning in 2002, by the Motion Picture Production Industry Association (MPPIA).
In 2007, the Digital Animation & Visual Effects Tax Credit (DAVE) was introduced by the Government of British Columbia. This was a great first start in helping to bring more work to BC, but over time, it became clear that post production’s exclusion from DAVE was going to be a source of confusion in the converging digital media and entertainment sectors, as well as a limiting factor in the growth potential of post production in general.
Stakeholders in the post community were keen to promote a change, and while there were many in government circles willing to listen, there was no single “voice” to exclusively present the case for Post’s inclusion in DAVE to the Provincial Government.
In the Spring of 2013, an ad hoc industry group came together to be that voice. Known at the time as The Steering Committee, this was the first iteration of the Vancouver Post Alliance. Only a few months later the VPA was officially established as a non-profit society, and its members simply continued the lobbying and promotional activities they had begun nine months earlier.
A milestone day came on March 1st, 2015 when the DAVE Tax Credit was officially expanded to include eligible post production services.
Following this successful outcome, the VPA then shifted its primary focus to the promotion, education, and support of the many thousands of post production technicians and artists working in BC. This mandate carries on today, as the Vancouver Post Alliance proudly continues to invest its energy and influence towards the professional growth of the talented people who make up BC’s exceptional post production industry. Together we are the VPA!
