Tell us a bit about your company, Core Music Agency. Core Music Agency is a wholly owned, licensed and bonded talent company, representing a diverse roster of composers, songwriters and music producers who create bespoke music for film, television, and video games.
How many staff members / freelancers do you employ? What makes your company different? 5 staff, 50 composers
What are you working on right now? Currently showing: Chappelwaite (EPIX), Them: Covenant (Amazon) Currently working on: Coroner (s4), Diggstown (s3), No One Gets Out Alive (Netflix), Hudson & Rex (s4), Highway Thru Hell (s10), Fireman Sam (s13), Chesapeake Shores (s5), Zak Bagans' Haunted Museum (s1), dozens of television movies for Hallmark, Lifetime, and Netflix.
What is your favourite project that you've worked on, and why? The Witch. It was a fantastic movie, and the score by Mark Korven was groundbreaking.
What percentage of your work is with local vs international clients/projects? The producers we work with are 36% BC, 44% Ontario, 7% other Canadian provinces, 13% international, but most of the shows we work on are bound for the US and international markets.
Are you a Mac / PC / Linux shop or all of the above? The agency itself is all Mac based, but our composers work on a multitude of different platforms, mostly Mac.
What software / hardware / plugins can you not live without? The majority of our client composers use: Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, and Digital Performer.
How difficult has the pandemic been for day to day operations? Our operations haven't changed that much as all of our agents work using a cloud-based project management system. We see less of each other but it hasn't lessened our productivity. All of our composers have their own studios, so the way they work hasn't changed much either, except that most live recordings are now done remotely. The biggest difficulty was weathering the 2-3 month lag following the production shutdown where there were considerably fewer projects to score.
Any workflow improvements brought about by the need to work-from-home / remote work changes? Working remotely has actually improved our work flow. Thought we miss the immediateness of in-person dialogue, working remotely from our homes has helped our staff focus and use their time more efficiently.
What do you miss most about “in person” client sessions? Laughter.
How long have you been a VPA Corporate Member? 3 or 4 years? Maybe more, I can't remember when we joined as corporate members.
