Tell us a bit about your company, Animism Studios Inc. Founded in 2017, Animism is a locally owned VFX facility that focuses on high quality work, technological innovation and, most importantly, recognizing the importance that people and relationships play into providing a meaningful and fulfilling work environment for both artists and clients.
How many staff members / freelancers do you employ? What makes your company different? 20 and growing.
What are you working on right now? Lost in Space Sonic 2 Charmed
What is your favourite project that you've worked on, and why? We aren’t yet able to mention the project by name, but the opportunity to contribute to a well-known franchise that originally inspired the formation of Animism Studios was a significant milestone for the management team.
What percentage of your work is with local vs international clients/projects? ~30% local ~70% international
Are you a Mac / PC / Linux shop or all of the above? Linux
What software / hardware / plugins can you not live without? As a studio that values innovation, we have built a pipeline that allows us to integrate many different software and hardware solutions, depending on a project’s needs. We are currently using Maya, Houdini, Nuke, Gaffer and Arnold.
Any workflow improvements brought about by the need to work-from-home / remote work changes? We were able to setup a remote workflow while maintaining TPN compliance. This has adjusted our approach to our day to day operations and we now offer a hybrid working environment where people can come into the office full time, part time or sometimes begin the day at home and finish in the studio. Flexibility is an important element in providing a work environment that values its people, so the pandemic has enabled us to better implement our company’s vision.
What do you miss most about "in person" client sessions? Meaningful relationships are more difficult to foster over a video call and things tend to feel more transactional.
How difficult has the pandemic been for day to day operations? Day to day operations have largely been unaffected from a management/communication viewpoint during the pandemic. As a smaller company, everybody knows everybody else from management down to the artists, so it’s been easier to get everybody onto the same daily video calls and stay connected during an otherwise isolating time.
How long have you been a VPA Corporate Member? New in 2021 Part of management has been a professional member since 2019.
Is there anything else about your company that you'd like people to know about that we haven't yet asked? Our specialty is character and creature work and we’ve had the most success in projects where we can be involved early to help streamline the creative/technical process to help our clients’ vision come to life.
