Each February, the board of the VPA holds a Strategic Planning Session. We use the time to identify four key pillars: our strengths, our weaknesses, our opportunities, and the threats we believe our organization faces. This is truly time well spent.

We often find that these themes present as two sides of the same coin. In our last session, we pinpointed the Indie community in Vancouver as both a weakness and an opportunity.  We recognize that we have a lot of work to do to build better bridges to this very dynamic and diverse group of filmmakers. We also see this as an opportunity in the sense that welcoming more Indie filmmakers into the VPA makes us a more dynamic and diverse organization.

With this in mind, we have been directing more focus, resources, and outreach towards our Indie friends. We have put our hands up to support the team at Filmmable as they host the closing party of VIFF. We are working on a very exciting panel discussion, which will work through post-production through the lens of filmmakers who are outside of the regular studio stream. Our upcoming marketing trip to LA will focus on their independent scene in an effort to introduce them to the BC advantage. There are a lot of balls in the air on this front.

So, if you have any ideas, suggestions, or names of people we should be welcoming into the VPA, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can always reach me at kelsy@vancouverpostalliance.com.
